The “threat” from Russia has become more pronounced, NATO needs to strengthen its defense capabilities and speak from a position of strength. This, as reported by TASS, said German Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, speaking in the Bundestag.
“The fact is that the Russian side has made significant investments in the modernization of its armed forces, that it has new types of weapons, that the threat has become more pronounced,” she said.
The German Defense Minister recommended “holding talks on this topic with colleagues from the Baltic States, Sweden, Central, and Eastern Europe.”
“We need to strengthen our position,” she added.
She called for negotiations with Russia on issues such as disarmament “from a position of strength.”
“This has always been a good position in German foreign policy, and it should remain so in the future,” she concluded.
Earlier, Kramp-Karrenbauer said that the EU and the United States need to increase pressure on the leaders of Russia and Syria, Vladimir Putin and Bashar al-Assad.
In January 2019, Ursula von der Leyen, then Germany’s defense minister, said Russia should play by the rules, and its western neighbors needed to be strong and patient.
As noted by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Germany needs to maintain a dialogue with Russia.
